Las Cruces
Mood:  caffeinated
Topic: Las Cruces service

Okay, so I've been living in Las Cruces, New Mexico for 5 years now. When I first moved here it was a great little town. People were nice and polite. You could go into a restaurant and get a great meal for under $7.

Now a mere 5 years later this town is terrible.

One of the things I find fascinating about Las Cruces is the OB Doctor situation.

Did you know that if a woman becomes pregnant in Las Cruces, New Mexico, she will not actually see an OB doctor?

Why you ask?

Because of malpractice suits up the BAZOO! That's right... Since I've lived in this town, Las Cruces has become known for it's higher than average infant mortality rate and this has caused many OB doctors in Las Cruces to move away because of malpractice insurance rates being so high.

For the doctors that actually decide to stay here and practice, they've devised a way to still get YOUR INSURANCE MONEY without ever even seeing you in person!

That's right... The standard practice for OB doctors in Las Cruces, New Mexico is to now refer pregnant women to a local midwife clinic. Not that seeing a midwife is a bad thing... Many midwives are outstanding at what they do.

However...

The doctors send you to a midwife but go ahead and charge your insurance company as if they have seen you and then kick back a very small amount to the midwife clinic.

You are assigned a midwife and either that midwife or several see you through your entire pregnancy and your actual doctor NEVER sees you!

In fact, during delivery, your doctor will not even be on the premises. A doctor that you do not even know will be on the premises JUST IN CASE there is some kind of emergency.

That's it. You're paying for a doctor but you're not getting a doctor.

This is how the doctors exchange their services for your insurance money.

Many new OB doctors have moved to Las Cruces over the past 2 years only to end up closing their practice and moving to another state because they could not handle the malpractice insurance costs.

Why the high malpractice insurance rates?

High infant mortality rates, plain and simple. Nobody talks about it. Nobody wants you to know about it.

In fact, it's one of the best kept secrets in Las Cruces, New Mexico -- one of the best places to retire in the United States of America.

Yeah right.

Just don't get pregnant here. High staff infection rates at both of the hospitals here in town.

Staff infections at hospitals???

Of all the places in the world, you'd think a hospital would be the last place to contract a staff infection.

Why does this happen?

Well it doesn't take much investigation to figure out why... I've been at both hospitals and the the staff infections come from the friggin' STAFF!

That's right... Hospital employees do not wash their hands after going to the restroom.

Hospital employees do not where gloves when handling patients.

Hospital employees do not stay clean at all during the day.

Amazing.

But true.
